“they tore down barriers between art music and noise music, physically and intellectually challenging their audience. this is how it’s done” (zensounds with stephan kunze)
“the contemporary music scene tends to rely on the qualities of a predictable pool of interpreters, but maerzmusik presented some refreshing exceptions to the rule this year… (the b-l duo) ignited uncompromisingly fast, loud, and precisely pixelated noise storms, intricate melodic roller coasters, and rhythmically pinpointed sound fragmentations” (neue musikzeitung: translated)
"a delightful discovery was the b-l duo (bertram wee and lynette yeo) from singapore, tackling electronic and acoustic keyboards, toy instruments, various sound objects, and with a stunning mix of styles. they performed a hyper-virtuosic and captivating piece like "rad" (2003) by enno poppe, bewildering due to the constantly changing tunings of the two keyboards. they also ventured into kazoo playing alongside keyboards, with toy pianos (…) creating a fantastic kaleidoscope of sounds; with a talk box (…) producing gurgling sounds progressively unleashing hell" (musicpaper, italy: translated) "(…) unforgivably dangerous (…) enough to put anyone with a weak heart in hospital (…) induces a motion-sickness type nausea (…) cool show, nonetheless" (chrislloydpianist.com)
“two truly virtuoso players performing death-defying pianistic feats in tandem and with such apparent ease” (the straits times, singapore)
the b-l duo (bertram wee / lynette yeo) is on a mission to play the creepiest, craziest keyboard music we can get our hands on. we gravitate towards stuff on the fringe of polite taste, with a stylistically diverse repertoire that spans work by genre-defining stalwarts of contemporary concert music to that of recent musical innovators. recent projects include performances at events such as hcmf// (Huddersfield), MaerzMusik (Berlin), Classical:NEXT (Berlin) and Sounds like THIS (Leeds).
we were winners of the royal over-seas league music competition, london (ensemble category) in 2017. In 2021, along with our esteemed colleagues we founded the Singapore-based new music collective weird aftertaste.
